If you’re really on a budget, you will be glad to know that there are many free photo editors out there ready for your download. These programs give you basic image editing features to perform standard photo enhancement tasks. I’ve compiled a list of 5 free photo editing programs for Windows which you may like to look at. These are quality programs which give commercial ones a serious run for their money.

Do take note, however, that some of these programs may be limited in features unless you buy an upgrade version.

Conclusion

I hope you’ll learnt a thing or two about the best free photo editors for Windows. Using a free photo editor is a great way to save money, while satisfying all your photo manipulation needs. However, I do advise that for serious, long-term photo editing tasks, go for commercial grade software such as Ulead PhotoImpact  and Paint Shop Pro.

Review

The software giant Adobe has revamped its popular Creative Suite package and agreed to a new version. Photoshop CS4 provides an improved working space, OpenGL-based features such as rotation of the canvas, new panels for Masks and Adjustments, on-the image that we can apply some adjustments to the style of Photoshop Lightroom, a 3D engine, and then only for begin.

Confines all the characteristic features of Photoshop in a single window of variable size and we can move to any position. If you open more than one document, they are displayed on separate tabs.

With Photoshop CS4 palettes are disappearing. In an effort to reduce the disruption of dialogs, the settings as Levels, Curves, Hue / Saturation, etc., now appear in a single Adjustments panel (settings) which means that your screen is no longer dotted with a few dialog boxes.

Advantages

  • Easy to use .
  • Good working space.

Disadvantages

Summary:

I started using PS7 at my work, and I use it mostly for dropping out products ontoa white background for web use. Its a pretty intimidating program at first, and it will take a very long time to master everything it has to off. I have been using the program for about two years now and I have tons of things to learn about the different tools & whatever else the program can do.

Strengths:

Very powerful, easy to adapt to the newest version of PS when it comes out. The RAW converter it comes with does an excellent job. Being able to run batch actions & desiging your own actions is very useful

Weaknesses:

Price. If I wasn’t a student, I wouldn’t have been able to afford it.

Paintshop Pro for a very short time

Summary:

This is the cream of the crop as far as photo editing software goes IMHO. I have only scratched the surface of what this program is capable of of doing. I was using PS 5 before purchasing this and the new tools like the healing brush, spot healing brush, and patch tools are great for cleaning up old slides.

The exposure adjustment and shadow/highlight tools are also wonderfull additions. These may not be new for people upgrading from CS but are a giant leap when going from PS5 to CS2. For me, the best part about this program is the build in RAW converter. It is so easy to use, and does a wonderful job with my RAW conversions. It’s as easy to use for batching a large group of RAW files as it is a single image.

I also love how the browser opens as a seperate program. The one thing I don’t like about it is that it can really slow down your computer if you don’t have enough memory. I’m only running a Toshiba Satellite P35-S609 laptop with a Pentium 4 3.20Ghz processor (538) with 512mb of RAM right now, and an upgrade would help. This is not CS2’s fault tho.

I gave it a value rating of 5 because I got the student version for $200, There is no dif. between the student version, and the regular version, other than the price. I dought I would have even considered this program if I had to pay full price. UPDATED 2/10/06 per MJS1973 to clarify computer configuration by ken1953

Strengths:

Easy transision from older versions of PS. RAW converter. Browser opens as a seperate program. Very convienent tools such as the healing bursh, spot healing brush and the patch tool.

Weaknesses:

Price, if you have to pay full price that is. System requirements. Beef up your RAM if you don’t have at least 1gig. This program can be very overwhelming if it’s your first time using Photoshop.
